In October 2023, CPKC proudly announced an agreement with the KC Current for naming rights to the first stadium in the world purpose-built for a professional women’s sports team.
Located near downtown Kansas City, Mo., CPKC Stadium is a seven-acre site at the east end of Berkley Riverfront Park. The 11,500 seat stadium opened on March 16, 2024 with the Kansas City Current’s home opener.
CPKC Stadium is the anchor of the ongoing riverfront development project at Berkley Riverfront Park undertaken by Port KC. With this stadium, KC Current not only signals its commitment to its athletes and fans, but also its commitment to Kansas City.
The outdoor gathering space located on the outside of the stadium is known as CPKC Plaza. The permanent home of the KC Current Store, CPKC Plaza will provide space for fans to gather before the matches and other events.
On March 16, 2024, CPKC proudly presented a stadium grand opening gift to the KC Current – a brand new Mini-Train. The ¼ scale model of a AC4400 locomotive and replica train, similar to our CPKC Little General Mini Train, was specially designed and built for the KC Current. It features a newly-designed Mini-Train passenger car in the shape of an intermodal container rail car.
Meaningful touches for the KC Current include a beautiful teal bench seat inside the intermodal car stamped with the KC Current logo and car numbers that are a nod to significant dates surrounding CPKC’s sponsorship of the team.
CPKC utilizes our Mini-Train fleet across our network to help raise awareness of rail safety, reminding people of all ages to stay away from railway tracks and trains.
The new Mini-Train is an exciting symbol of CPKC’s commitment to CPKC Stadium, the Kansas City Current and to the people of Kansas City.
For every goal scored by the KC Current, during regular season (both home & away), $1,000 will be donated to the Adelaide C. Ward Women’s Heart Health Center at the University of Kansas Health System for the CardioScore program.
CardioScore is a noninvasive computed tomography (CT) scan of the heart that measures the amount of hard plaque in a person’s coronary arteries. It is used to help understand risks for developing coronary artery disease.
On December 7, 2020 the NWSL announced the decision to award an expansion franchise to Kansas City. In the year following, world-class women’s soccer was brought to the U.S. Heartland, where KC Current completed its inaugural season in front of the world’s best sports fans. With fierce ambition, player power and pride for Kansas City, the Current are on a mission to do things this sport has never seen.
